10 Legs, 8 Broken
Cinematography
This cinematic rendition of Rudy Francisco's poem 10 Legs, 8 Broken captures a heart-wrenching dialogue between human and spider.

Understanding the Message
To begin this project, I first studied the lyricism in the poem in order to better understand what the story intends to tell. I see it as a poignant apology and accusation in one, where the spider questions the human's responsibility. The spider kills for survival, fueled by instinct. What compelled the human to kill?

Setting up a Story
Once I had a solid understanding of the messaging, I began to piece the story together with an AV script. This helped me visualize scenes for dialogue, ensuring the shot captured the emotion suggested by the line in the poem.

Translating Words to Visuals
After my script was complete, I used the visual descriptions to sketch out the composition of shots in a comprehensive storyboard. This provided the direction for filming.

No Spiders Were Harmed
With script and storyboards in hand, the only thing I still needed to complete this video was my 2nd main character. Of course, I would not harm a real spider for these scenes! Using some Halloween toy spiders, a T-pin, a lighter, and some marker, I brought some realistic spider props to life. These props facilitated the shots with the spider and added a level of realness to the scenes.
