Packaging Design

This project required me to redesign an existing package to be more sustainable in terms of materials, have better packaging utility, and reduce the shipping carbon footprint. I was challenged to address and increase the brand’s position in the market using informative copy, impact graphics, and typography.

Room for Improvement

The original package design lacked consideration for storage and functionality. For maximum freshness, chia seeds should be kept away from heat, light, and moisture. Clear plastic fails to protect the product from these factors. Additionally, the zipper closure leaves plenty of room for human error. The flexible packaging makes it difficult to dispense, requiring a separate tool to control flow.

Optimized Container

When choosing an alternative container, I made product freshness and sustainability my top priorities. To maintain freshness, I swapped the original plastic packaging for a paper carton alternative. The spout is a functional component, making it easy for consumers to control how chia seeds are dispensed. The cap of this container serves another function as well, able to hold a serving size (1 Tbsp), it can be used as a measuring “cap” for easy portion control.
